I have been on the heavier side all my life. However, I have recently lost 55 pounds (and still counting!) and knew I just needed to do the pictures now. The photos came out beautiful, and I am so happy and proud that I DID IT!!

Why did you decide to do a boudoir session?

Giving my boyfriend a very special gift for his birthday - - one he can keep forever.

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale Arizona for your boudoir experience?

First, Christina's website is very informative, meaning it describes the experience in great detail, so I had some idea what to expect. 2nd, I really liked that my makeup and hair were included as part of the basic shoot fee. 3rd, I appreciated that Christina also built in a PRE-shoot, Zoom session to review details (i.e. what to wear) and answer my questions. 4th, and perhaps most importantly, I could tell from the above 3 factors and after talking with Christina that she is high class and was willing to work with me regarding a couple of my particular concerns.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this experience change the way you see yourself?

At my age, (about to turn 74), I am, finally, a confident person. So this experience didn't change how I see myself. Rather, it gave me "permission" to be who I really am; meaning to let loose and enjoy it!

Did you have any fears going into your boudoir photoshoot? Were you able to overcome them? Is there anything you wish you had done differently?

My principal fears were that, at my age and given some of my physical issues, (i.e. arthritis), I would have difficulty doing the poses and looking sexy. Both Christina and her assistant worked with me to overcome this and pose me in a way that looked sexy and natural.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

I had fun! I brought my own playlist and joked around about sex, my body, and my physical issues, (i.e. arthritis). I went into this with an attitude that I was going to have fun - - (versus worrying about perfection). I trusted Christina to do the rest as the professional photographer experienced in this work.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photoshoot?

Don't allow "the perfect to be the enemy of the good." Go in with an attitude of having fun; enjoy the experience. Do your preparation, (i.e. pick your few best outfits, make your playlist, assemble your stuff at least the day before), and then have fun! Trust in Christina to do her job and get you to look your best. She knows what she is doing!

For the memories — I want to be able to look back and see how beautiful I once was; this is something I've wanted to do for a few years and finally got to do it!

Yes — I haven't done a photo shoot in a very long time, and this was my first with few (if any!) 'clothes' on. I was nervous at first, but once it got going, I forgot to be nervous and tried to have fun. It helped that direction was provided.

5 Things you wish you had known before your boudoir shoot

1. Boudoir photos are not just a gift for him.

   For a lot of women, the idea of a boudoir session starts out as a gift for their significant other only later to discover the ultimate gift was always for you — the gift of self worth, affirmation, and love. Boudoir really is a life-altering experience for most women. It’s an opportunity to boost your self-esteem and fall back in love with yourself. And so, going into this with a self love journey mindset you can change your perspective on how to plan for your session. With that knowledge, focusing on what you think he finds sexy is great but it’s not everything. Make this yours! Consider what is going to make you feel your most confident and the rest will follow.

   Confidence really is the sexiest thing a woman can wear!

   You do not need to stress about losing weight before your session.

   Don’t worry so much about slimming down before your session. Remember, you’ve chosen a professional boudoir photographer for their encouragement, advice, and expertise. Your boudoir photographer should know how to pose you in the most flattering ways. At Bella Jade Boudoir the most important thing you can do when it comes to losing weight before your boudoir session is to trust that these will be the most beautiful portraits of yourself you’ve ever seen, regardless if you’ve met some kind of weight loss milestone or not.

A boudoir photo shoot should be really fun!

At our studio for boudoir in Scottsdale, we aim to give our boudoir clients not just great photos but an incredible, liberating, and exciting experience! And while it’s tempting to keep your concerns to yourself, you don’t be shy especially about your inhibitions. If your worried about your photos being shared online let’s talk about it . If you’re self-conscious about your body (whether it’s your size, scars, stretch marks, or maybe an old tattoo)? Let’s talk about it.

Understanding your concerns allows me to be a better photographer for you. Moreover, speaking up before the shoot means no awkward moments during your session or avoidable disappointments after. Boudoir is rarely seen as taboo these days. In fact it has become a very popular choice for women who are who are getting married, or celebrating a life event like turning 50, getting a promotion, or stepping into a big change. But, for the most part, there seems to be a common theme that’s even simpler than that — an act of self-love that needs no occasion.

Which means the person you are talking to might not actually be the same person that will be at your session. It is important that you know who will be taking your boudoir photos. Do not be afraid to ask this question!

   Bella Jade Boudoir is a full service, high touch, low volume studio. We generally book a limited amount of sessions per month. (I know I know, we may be missing out on some mula doing things this way, but it is more important to me that we can ensure every client gets the same luxury experience! We just don’t want to overbook or overexert ourselves. Simple as that).

   On the plus side, that means every woman that comes through our studio knows exactly who they’ll be working with and can receive the one on one guidance they need for an amazing time with us!

   In short — We DO NOT hire out other photographers to fill your session. The person you speak to at your consultation is the same person that will be with you and photographing you on the day of your session. “It’s me. Hi! ‘Im, Christina”. You can learn more about me and our team here.

2. Where will my boudoir session take place?

   The term boudoir means “private bedroom or sitting room”. Likely your boudoir session will take place in a setting like described. This could be anything from your own home, your photographers home, a hotel room, a rented space, or a private studio. Not all boudoir photographers have a designated space for their boudoir sessions. Your photographer should have no problem taking to you about where your session will take place.

   When you book a shoot with Bella Jade Boudoir we have two of our very own private boudoir studios to choose from. We offer our classic Main Studio, or you can opt for our signature rich and moody studio, also known as The Grey Room which are both located in Old Town Scottsdale. 3. What’s included with the cost of my boudoir session?

   Since every boudoir photographer has a different process, be sure to ask what’s included with your boudoir photo shoot price. The most common additional costs may include, professional hair and make up, studio/hotel rental, price per outfit change, additional hours, prints and products.

   When your book a shoot at Bella Jade Boudoir your session includes a styling and wardrobe consultation, photo focused hair and make up pampering, private studio location, expert photoshoot coaching and posing direction, professional beauty retouching and editing of your photos, and a boutique ordering experience to view your photos and place your final package order. Since our final packages options vary in products prices and number of images, we want you to see your photos and sample our products before you invest in your final images. For this, all of your photos, prints, and products are purchased separately on the day of your ordering appointment (typically two weeks after your session date).
   
   That means — You only purchase what YOU love!

4. How many boudoir sessions do you do per day?

   Note that some boudoir photographers shoot back to back sessions. For most women, privacy and comfortability is important. If this is you, asking this question might help you decide which photographer is right for you.

   To be honest, shooting more than one session per day can be exhausting and I want to be ALL IN FOR YOU during your session. At Bella Jade we schedule one session per date giving you all of our energy and allowing you as much time as you need to get more comfortable in front of the camera. We want you to feel supported, comfortable, not rushed, and have a genuine good time hanging out with your new hype girls for a day!

   Typically our sessions last between 3 to 4 hours including hair and make up. We sometimes do photograph multiple women in one day but this is reserved for private events like Bachelorette Boudoir Parties or Best Friend Sessions but we’ll save that information for another day on another blog post.

5. Do you have experience shooting women my age, my size, etc.?

   Experience and boudoir specific training in boudoir photography matters, A LOT. After all, this is the person you’ll be trusting with your personal boudoir photos. If you’re wanting to do a boudoir shoot as a way to boost your confidence you’ll want to hire a boudoir photographer who is experienced, knows how to coach you through posing, and has an eye for photographing all body types in the most flattering ways. Want to ditch the heels? Girl, Do it!

For this boudoir shoot we kicked the stilettoes to the side and I am so glad that we did! This was Miss J’s third shoot with us. Her first was traditional and timeless, the second a brilliant blend of edgy and ethereal.

I know well enough by now that this time around she would want to do things differently — Miss J. is not the type to be afraid to step outside of the box and get creative.
