While many women initially consider doing a boudoir shoot as a way to gift something special to their fiance or significant other — women truly want to do this for themselves, and I’ll bet you do too! After her session and seeing her final images we interviewed Miss K. to learn more about what it was like for her finally getting to do something like this. Here is how she describes doing a boudoir session at Bella Jade Boudoir:

What inspired you to pursue a boudoir photo shoot?

I wanted to build some confidence, but I’m also getting married and wanted a surprise for my soon-to-be husband.

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale for your boudoir experience?

I just loved Christina’s work and her whole vibe! Her online presence is very positive and empowering. And her work is sexy and fun without being over the top.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this experience change the way you see yourself?

I think of my self as a mostly confident person with some things I can definitely work on. The experience helped me to gain some confidence in my body and my ability to look sexy at any size.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them? Anything you wish you would have done differently?

I was nervous that I was just going to look like a whale in anything that wasn’t something full coverage. But with help from Christina beforehand in outfit selection as well as just her being a rockstar and finding the right positions for me, I LOVED the results. I legit never thought I could look so hot!!

What was your favorite part about your boudoir experience?

Hanging with Christina and Leah! They are so much fun and made me feel so comfortable, confident, and beautiful. They were also amazing about finding angles and looks that worked for ME not just putting everything into a cookie cutter and dealing with the results.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photoshoot?

BOOK THE SHOOT!!! You aren’t too old, fat, saggy, or whatever… your body is beautiful and you should celebrate the stage you’re in!! This is also such a fun, sexy surprise for someone! I can NOT wait to give my fiancé the results!!

Boudoir Photography And How It Changes You

First, why I wanted to share this with you:

Woman to woman, the pressure to exist and look a certain way can be all too familiar for most women. Whether you’re single, married, divorced, a housewife, homemaker, stay-at-home mom, working mom, a career-centric woman with no kids both or anything else, the modern woman is undeniably a force to be reckoned with. She does it all and looks damn good doing it! Am I right? But, that doesn’t come without creeping feelings of guilt, burnout, feeling inadequate, or dealing with some form of self-loss.

It’s undoubtedly an incredible time to be a woman — do not get me wrong! But it can also be stressful, overwhelming, and seemingly impossible to keep up at times. Especially with things like social media, reminding us every day that someone out there somewhere is probably doing it better, and somehow does it all while still having a rock-solid bangin body appearing as if they are just effortlessly walking around the world. {Insert intrusive thoughts: ‘being a woman is so easy you’re just not doing it right’} The point is that we are living in a world that makes it feel good to be a woman, but also one where instant gratification and highlight reels can send us on a path of comparison and self-doubt to no end.

I’m here to tell you that you are not alone. Also, that it’s never selfish to take care of yourself, set boundaries, do more of what makes you come alive, and love yourself through that process. There will be highs and there will be lows. That’s inevitable. But you get to choose how your story will be written and you, my love, set the bar for how you get to feel about you! You control the narrative, babe! This is all the more reason why so many women are choosing to do a boudoir session for themselves. They want to celebrate their victories, feel good in their own skin and learn to love themselves unconditionally.

So, how does a boudoir session change you?

As a female boudoir photographer in the Phoenix area for over 8 years I’ve gotten to work with women from all walks of life. Women come into our studio for all sorts of reasons! Whether its to celebrate a milestone, a gift for their significant other, an act of self love or something else, do you want to know the one thing most have in common? They want to change the way they see themselves!

Picture it — you walk into our Scottsdale boudoir studio on the day of your very own shoot. You are eager, excited, nervous, palms sweaty, trying to hide how incredibly nervous you actually are. But then, you are warmly greeted by an all women team. You lay out your outfits getting advice and encouragement along the way. You sit down for hair and make up, get to chatting and your fears and feelings of self doubt start to fade. It begins to feel more like a day just hanging out with the best of friends, laughing, sharing stories, dishing the tea, and celebrating each other like you’ve known each other for years. You take a deep breath and think ‘im’m safe here, these are girls, girls’.

The time comes to slip into your first outfit. And, it challenges you to see yourself and let yourself be seen. But as you get into poses and are coached through that process you recognize that all of the fear leading up to this was just your intrusive thoughts … getting in the way of you looking and feeling your most confident self! You’re laughing, feeling sexy, and having fun! It’s now the end of you’re shoot and you’re walking away feeling like you’re on cloud nine, radiating with beauty and an abundance self love! You did it! And, you feel more alive than you’ve felt in a long time!

You come back to see your very own boudoir photos for the first time. Not without inhibition( let’s be honest we all have flaws, and your inner critic can be awfully convincing) but you made a pact with yourself to be more gentle with your body so you look up at them anyway, amazed by your own beauty. You’re realizing you were enough after all, and that you too are a gorgeous, incredible, strong, and beautiful woman! It changes you! It inspires you to love yourself more, be more present, and take more time to just be yourself! The bombshell, and absolute goddess who was always there and just needed a little boost to show fully, has arrived! And, there ain’t no stopping her now!

But, that does’t mean we are living under a rock. Regardless of your size, the more insecure you feel about your body the harder it is to pull the trigger and book the boudoir session you’ve always wanted. Whether it’s with us or another boudoir photographer, trusting the creative direction of your boudoir photographer and knowing what to wear for your boudoir session plays a big role in how you’ll feel about your boudoir photos. But there are still a few things we encourage you to do before your session that can ensure you’ll love the way you look in your boudoir photos! I am going to share a few tips and outfit suggestions we give our mid to plus-size clients during their pre shoot consultation (which is included when you book a shoot with us!).

Even those who have insecurities surrounding their midsection or where their body carries the most weight can benefit from these tips!

If you’re considering a Scottsdale Boudoir Session or have already started planning for your plus-size boudoir shoot this is for you!

My hope is that these tips will help you begin to feel more comfortable with your boudoir shoot and have a few ideas to inspire what to wear for your plus size session.

Tip #1: You do not have to hide your body!

First let’s address a common pain point for women — the tummy. If this area is a trouble zone that you’d rather not highlight in your photos there are options! High-waisted panties and high-quality onesies like teddies and bodysuits will flatter your figure better than your typical budget bra and panty set. Plus, since it conceals your tummy area these types of outfits can also help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Underarms and cellulite? Try long sleeves in lace, incorporate a robe add stockings to your boudoir outfit! These items will hug your body, accentuate your curves, and smooth out your trouble areas giving you a desired look that will help ease your nerves and empower confidence!

Tip #2 : Remember that numbers do not define you!

Whether it’s the number on a scale or your pants size do not stress it! Focus less on numbers and more on what fits you best! I’ve personally been a 10 to 14, busty woman for most of my adult life and I learned very quickly that the conventional idea of small, medium, large just doesn’t work for me. Don’t waste your time crying over having to size up or worse getting the wrong size just to satisfy your ego. Choosing the wrong size for the sake of avoiding the dreaded size up could ultimately result in being unhappy with how that translates on camera. Size up or down depending on what fits and be careful not to let insecurities and doubts guide your choices If the numbers don’t add up to a perfect body that’s ok. Perfect is not the goal — learning to love yourself just as you are is so much more important than numbers on a scale.

Tip #3: Do not limit yourself to just lingerie.

There are so many alternative options to lingerie that can be just as sexy for a boudoir photoshoot. Sometimes, the non-lingerie outfits turn out to be the favorite! Boudoir outfit ideas that aren’t lingerie include sweaters, jeans/jean shorts, little black dresses, t-shirts, jerseys, something from your significant other’s closet or even just sheets. What inspired you to pursue a Scottsdale boudoir session?

I heard about it from make up artists over the past year or so and was always intrigued.

I am recently divorced and a new-ish mom and had lost my "sexy vibes" over the last 3 years of this - so wanted to re-find my sexy side.

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale Arizona for your Boudoir Experience?

Her style of photos resonated with me.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this boudoir experience change the way you see yourself?

I'm confident - maybe it doesn't seem that way posing lol but I am proud of my body and love it. I work very hard to keep it healthy. This photo shoot just demonstrated a different side. I default to feeling strong in my body but this was a softer sexy side that I typically am not as confident in.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

Not really - but it is a bit awkward posing sexy for a camera. I'd like to continue to explore this.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

Christina and her make up artist were amazing. Super funny. Made me look gorgeous!
