The word boudoir pronounced buˈdwɑ (unless you’re me then it’s just boo-dwar) is an old-fashioned term used to refer to “a woman's bedroom or dressing room”. It originates from the French word boudoir which means “to sulk”. Naturally, boudoir photography typically takes place in a bedroom setting showcasing a woman posing suggestively wearing lingerie garments or similar.

Although previously a male-dominated industry featuring photos of models and imagery centered around the female form as sexually suggestive art, I’ve watched boudoir photography evolve into something I am very passionate about — empowering women.

You will find that a lot of photographers’ portfolios are primarily of models. And yes, you will find photographers out there who use filters and body morphing apps to sculpt images that prioritize perfection.

I can tell you that is not us.

As a female boudoir photographer, I aim to help women fall back in love with themselves. And, my boudoir photography studio has become known for being a creative private space where women can feel safe and comfortable getting boudoir photos taken.

It’s a place for everyday women aspiring to feel more confident in their own skin. A place where they can step out of their comfort zone, and change how they see themselves! For that, at Bella Jade Boudoir, getting boudoir photos is less about the male gaze or having the perfect body and more about how a woman feels in her own skin.

My initial approach to boudoir and for the last 8+ years has been to have a lot of fun, encourage self-love, enhance your beauty, honor your curves, and capture images that memorialize a moment when you felt celebrated, confident, and sexy!

I'm confident - maybe it doesn't seem that way posing lol but I am proud of my body and love it. I work very hard to keep it healthy. This photo shoot just demonstrated a different side. I default to feeling strong in my body but this was a softer sexy side that I typically am not as confident in.

Not really - but it is a bit awkward posing sexy for a camera. I'd like to continue to explore this.

What inspired you to pursue a Scottsdale boudoir session?

I was celebrating my 40th wedding anniversary and 58th birthday in September and wanted to do a little something out of the ordinary.

I looked online and loved what I saw and what I read about The Bella Jade Collection. After the full experience, I am so grateful that I chose them because they were the best from getting me ready for the shoot and helping me with the shoot itself and the end product was fantastic. Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this boudoir experience change the way you see yourself?

I am definitely a work in progress. Even though I can be very confident about certain aspects of my life this was definitely one of those areas where I doubt myself and feel self conscious. All of the uplifting emails throughout the process certainly helped to put me at ease and Christina was very upbeat and a fantastic coach helping me pose, etc.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

I was afraid that I would not look very attractive, especially as a woman my age putting myself out there to be photographed. I must say that even at 58 years old the photos turned out spectacular and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

I loved the photo shoot with the girls. They made me feel so comfortable and I was sad to see it end and could have stayed there all day. It was like spending the day with your girlfriends and having the best time.

“How was I going to be so vulnerable in front of someone I barely knew? How was I going to choose the right look I wanted? Was it going to be awkward? I have wanted to do something like this for quite some time. I wanted to be able to learn to love my body. I stumbled across Bella Jade on Instagram. I loved seeing all the different women being shown and reading up on their experiences. All of these things finally helped me go for it!

At Bella Jade Boudoir our sessions happen right here in Old Town Scottsdale at one of our very own private boudoir studios.

This set is part of our classic boudoir experience which takes place in our Main Studio. The Main studio is our upper level studio option. It is just shy of 1000 square feet boasting high ceilings, tall white brick walls throughout, and an abundance of beautiful soft natural light — making it the ideal backdrop for those looking for timeless, tastefully sexy boudoir photos.

The vintage sofa is one of a handful of furniture props in this space that we use to enhance your boudoir photos, provide a variety of creative posing opportunities, and give your boudoir images a look that reflects a classic boudoir or bedroom setting.

Words can not express the amazing experience I had.  Turning 50 at the end of 2022 and being body shamed since I was 12 this was something I have wanted to do for years but was so afraid to.  Made it a bucket list item and signed up.  I did my research on other photographers but following Christina on social media I got the feeling she truly cared and understood that not all women are built the same and we have our insecurities.  I was right the moment I walked in the door the day of the shoot I felt like I was hanging out with old friends just catching up and having a great time.  Then when I saw the completed pics all my previous worries went away and I am completely proud of myself for doing this.  If this is something you are wanting to do I highly recommend reaching out to The Bella Jade Collection.

To celebrate her 50th birthday Miss T. decided to book a boudoir session with us at Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale. This was something she knew would have to be on her bucket list no matter how scary it seemed — She would later find that doing this session had in fact made a positive impact on her self esteem and gave her a huge sense of pride. Looking back at these photos is now something she finds encouraging, empowering, and uses it as a reminder for herself that we are capable of amazing things if we can set aside what we’re afraid of, believe in ourselves, and are willing to step outside of our comfort zones.

For her boudoir session Miss T. booked The Grey Room and wore a variety of outfits from sweet, subtlety seductive to something more ris·qué including topless with a white button down shirt. In her after the session interview she talks about how her most nerve wracking outfit ended up being in one of her favorite pics.

What inspired you to pursue a Scottsdale boudoir session?

Completing a childhood dream and turning 50. So happy that I was able to complete this bucket list item.

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir The Bella Jade Collection for your Scottsdale Arizona boudoir experience?

Found The Bella Jade Collection on Facebook and Instagram and started following. I really liked the photos and the inspirational messages that were sent out. Not all women are built the same and it felt like Christina truly understood that.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this boudoir experience change the way you see yourself?

I am a work in progress. Completing this photo shoot had me face a fear and anytime I start to forget I always look at one of my pics from the shoot and its a reminder of who I am and what I can do.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

So many fears going into this even during the shoot there was an outfit I was terrified of the way the pics would turn out. I am so glad I continued with my outfit as one of the most terrifying outfits are one of my favorite pics. I actually don't think I would have done anything differently.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

The girls (makeup artist and Christina) making it from the beginning like we were old friends just hanging out and having a good time.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photo shoot?

DO IT!! This is for YOU and no one else. Don't worry about what people will think or say about you completing this. Your dreams are yours and no one has the right to take that away from you.
