3 Things to avoid before a boudoir photoshoot

Are you preparing for a boudoir session? You may have common questions like: “Should I get a spray tan for boudoir photos? Should I eat or not eat before the shoot? Or, what should I bring with me? At Bella Jade Boudoir, we answer all of your questions during your pre-shoot consultation! But we get it — sometimes it’s not just about having your questions answered, but knowing what questions to ask. As a top boudoir photographer in Scottsdale with almost a decade of experience in boudoir photography, I’m revealing three things we generally recommend our boudoir clients avoid!

Overconsumption Night Before

It is best to avoid consuming alcohol the night before a boudoir session. However, we do encourage you to follow your regular dinner routine. Do not fast or crash diet hours before your shoot. You’ll want to be energized and hydrated! Eat a nutritious dinner, drink lots of water, and have a light breakfast before you arrive!

First Timer Spray Tans, and Self Tanner

There are both pros and cons to getting a spray tan prior to a boudoir shoot. In most cases, as your boudoir photographer, I will recommend avoiding spray tans altogether especially if it is not something you do on a regular basis. If you must — hire a professional, let them know you are having a boudoir photoshoot, and when. Self-tanner is never recommended.

Last Minute Panic Packing

Try on all of your outfit options in advance, narrow them down the best you can. For Bella Jade Boudoir’s regular boudoir sessions, two to four outfits is ideal. Lay them out on your bed and plan out any accessories you’d like to bring with you. Only pack what you need. An extra outfit or panty is okay just in case, but refrain from throwing in miscellaneous outfits, accessories/props last minute. You likely will not need them! Besides, too many outfits, accessories, and props can be overwhelming and take away from the real star of the show, which is you!

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale Arizona for your boudoir experience?

First, Christina's website is very informative, meaning it describes the experience in great detail, so I had some idea what to expect. 2nd, I really liked that my makeup and hair were included as part of the basic shoot fee. 3rd, I appreciated that Christina also built in a PRE-shoot, Zoom session to review details (i.e. what to wear) and answer my questions. 4th, and perhaps most importantly, I could tell from the above 3 factors and after talking with Christina that she is high class and was willing to work with me regarding a couple of my particular concerns.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this experience change the way you see yourself?

At my age, (about to turn 74), I am, finally, a confident person. So this experience didn't change how I see myself. Rather, it gave me "permission" to be who I really am; meaning to let loose and enjoy it!

Did you have any fears going into your boudoir photoshoot? Were you able to overcome them? Is there anything you wish you had done differently?

My principal fears were that, at my age and given some of my physical issues, (i.e. arthritis), I would have difficulty doing the poses and looking sexy. Both Christina and her assistant worked with me to overcome this and pose me in a way that looked sexy and natural.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

I had fun! I brought my own playlist and joked around about sex, my body, and my physical issues, (i.e. arthritis). I went into this with an attitude that I was going to have fun - - (versus worrying about perfection). I trusted Christina to do the rest as the professional photographer experienced in this work.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photoshoot?

Don't allow "the perfect to be the enemy of the good." Go in with an attitude of having fun; enjoy the experience. Do your preparation, (i.e. pick your few best outfits, make your playlist, assemble your stuff at least the day before), and then have fun! Trust in Christina to do her job and get you to look your best. She knows what she is doing!

But there are a few things you can do to ease your mind and feel better before walking into your boudoir shoot. It just may not be what you're thinking…

How to Feel better About Getting Boudoir Photos Taken:

1. Know your why and be true to yourself.

   Why do you want to do something like this? This matters just as much as the final photos! Is it a gift for someone else? A gift to yourself? A celebration of a milestone? An act of self-love? To help you change the way you see yourself? A self-esteem boost? Start by thinking about how you want to be photographed and whether or not that vision aligns with your why. It may help to create a dream board of photos that inspire you, or outfit ideas that you think you’d feel good in! If you're unsure about what style you like best or what to wear, do not be afraid to ask for advice (whether it’s from your photographer or previous clients it will help tremendously!). As you begin planning for your boudoir shoot remember: the confidence gained from a boudoir session comes from realizing your own beauty, not from being someone entirely other than yourself. Embrace who you are and work with your strengths choosing things that make you feel your best, challenge you, and empower you.

2. Choose a boudoir photographer that is right for you!
   

When deciding on your photographer, check out their website, reviews, and recent work. Does it inspire you? Does it get you excited for what your own boudoir shoot could be like? Do you feel they can and have addressed your questions or concerns? Do your research before scheduling your session because finding the right photographer (or the wrong one) can greatly impact the overall experience and how you see yourself after viewing your photos. Having the support of your photographer/team and knowing that you’re in good hands ultimately will give you more confidence in doing a boudoir shoot. For that, make sure your photographer is someone you can connect with, trust to deliver amazing results, open to answering all of your questions, and make you feel seen and heard.

3. Voice your insecurities and inhibitions.

I realize that this one seems a little counterintuitive. It’s not. Be an advocate for yourself. At the end of the day you know yourself better than anyone. If there's something about this that makes you incredibly nervous, say it. Don’t be afraid to voice your insecurities and inhibitions, especially, when it comes to privacy.

Even if you do not plan on gifting your boudoir photos, know that October through February is our busiest time of year here at Bella Jade Boudoir in Scottsdale. We do everything from bridal boudoir sessions, sultry and moody spooky time shoots, Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day gifts for yourself or for him, Galentines BFF boudoir sessions, and couples boudoir. So yes, our schedule fills up fast this time of year!

For that, it’s never too early to start planning your very own boudoir session! Booking your photoshoot now not only ensures you’ll get a spot on our calendar, and hopefully your desired date! But, it also ensures time for you to plan for your session, put together outfits, brainstorm ideas if you're incorporating Holiday or seasonal themes, and guarantees a spot for a one-on-one styling and wardrobe consultation with your Phoenix Boudoir Photographer! Not to mention (and this is a big one) allows for enough turn around time to meet Holiday deadlines!

Are Boudoir Photo Shoots Awkward? | Phoenix Boudoir Photographer located in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona

Many women have fears and concerns when deciding to do a boudoir photoshoot. If you’re worried having your boudoir photos taken will be awkward I want to assure you — doing a boudoir shoot is not awkward. That’s just not true. With the right fit photographer, and a private, safe, and positive environment, doing a boudoir session is a lot of fun! Moreover, it will be an empowering and liberating experience you won’t regret!

After my sessions, most women tell me they can’t believe they took so long to book it, and that every woman should get a chance to experience this at least once in their lifetime. Sometimes those clients even come back! Once they know what to expect, they have an easier time letting their guard down and get to experience it all over again in a new way!

All that being said, unfortunately, the thought of getting boudoir photos being awkward can result in some women never getting to experience this at all. Ultimately, missing out on all of the benefits a boudoir session!

Which is the reason I wanted to write this. If you’re holding off on booking a boudoir session, or are close to throwing in the towel all together consider that doing a shoot like this isn’t as awkward as you might think. In fact, it feels more like a self-care day hanging with your best girl friends! And I mean that. Listen, choosing to do something like this for yourself takes courage. For most women it’s an investment, a special gift for their significant other that is unmatched by any other gift they could imagine, but it’s also an opportunity to lay your insecurities to rest and change the way you see yourself. It asks you to challenge yourself often stepping way out of your comfort zone for something you’ve never done before. And, for obvious reasons, it calls for you to be honest with yourself, look past your flaws, and put your trust in others, and that can feel vulnerable!

For that, it’s not unusual for our clients to open up to us with some pretty intimate details about their lives. I think that comes naturally when you feel fully supported by other women who really want to see you shine! And I’m here for it. Because stripping down to lingerie, and trusting me to capture the most beautiful portraits of themselves they’ve ever seen is kind of a big deal! I want to be the person for you that supports you, that makes you feel welcome, that guides you through the entire process, and helps you fall back in love with yourself!

Their authenticity, their willingness to take it all in, do something they’ve never done before, look past their flaws, push through their insecurities, and learn to love themselves more … it all truly blows me away!
