Are you looking for ways to prepare for a boudoir photoshoot and feel better about getting your boudoir photos taken? As a Phoenix Boudoir Photographer for over 8 years, I can assure you that confidence is a product of boudoir, not a pre-requisite. But there are a few things you can do to ease your mind and feel better before walking into your boudoir shoot. It just may not be what you're thinking…

How to Feel better About Getting Boudoir Photos Taken:

  1. Know your why and be true to yourself.

Why do you want to do something like this? This matters just as much as the final photos! Is it a gift for someone else? A gift to yourself? A celebration of a milestone? An act of self-love? To help you change the way you see yourself? A self-esteem boost? Start by thinking about how you want to be photographed and whether or not that vision aligns with your why. It may help to create a dream board of photos that inspire you, or outfit ideas that you think you’d feel good in! If you're unsure about what style you like best or what to wear, do not be afraid to ask for advice (whether it’s from your photographer or previous clients it will help tremendously!). We also offer plenty of resources that can help you plan for your session like The Boudoir Personality Quiz and our Boudoir Photoshoot Planner. Take advantage of them! As you begin planning for your boudoir shoot remember: the confidence gained from a boudoir session comes from realizing your own beauty, not from being someone entirely other than yourself. Embrace who you are and work with your strengths choosing things that make you feel your best, challenge you, and empower you.

  2. Choose a boudoir photographer that is right for you!

When deciding on your photographer, check out their website, reviews, and recent work. Does it inspire you? Does it get you excited for what your own boudoir shoot could be like? Do you feel they can and have addressed your questions or concerns? Do your research before scheduling your session because finding the right photographer (or the wrong one) can greatly impact the overall experience and how you see yourself after viewing your photos. Having the support of your photographer/team and knowing that you’re in good hands ultimately will give you more confidence in doing a boudoir shoot. For that, make sure your photographer is someone you can connect with, trust to deliver amazing results, open to answering all of your questions, and make you feel seen and heard.

3. Voice your insecurities and inhibitions.

I realize that this one seems a little counterintuitive. It’s not. Be an advocate for yourself. At the end of the day you know yourself better than anyone. If there's something about this that makes you incredibly nervous, say it. Don’t be afraid to voice your insecurities and inhibitions, especially, when it comes to privacy.

Don’t want your private photos on social media? Not sure how to pose? Worried about showing that one thing about your body you are most self-conscious of? Trust me, the photographer who cares about you wants to know and they want to help!

If you book a shoot with us here at Bella Jade you’ll get a one-on-one consultation with the photographer before your session date. This is your time, babe. I can understand that bringing up insecurities sounds scary. However, it’s a great opportunity to work through them as a team, get in front of it, and create a plan that will ultimately help you feel better! Come the day of your shoot, you’ll feel more comfortable, and get to focus on the good stuff — like being yourself, feeling sexy, and having fun!

Of course, there are many more tips to feeling better about having boudoir photos done. If you want to learn more or have any questions reach out to Bella Jade Boudoir here.

What to Wear: Natural Boudoir

For boudoir photos that look and feel natural, less is more. A simple teddy or bra and panty set is all you’ll need to create this look. Focus on what fits well, hugs your curves, and feels most comfortable. For this look, subtle textures like lace, and floral work well. Neurals, earthy tones, or pastel colors like baby blue, and blush are ideal.

What To Wear: Comfy Boudoir

If lingerie isn’t really your thing, or you just love the idea of doing a boudoir session in something other than lingerie. This outfit idea feels cozy but also looks super cute, and should definitely be on your list of things to consider! Think over the shoulder sweaters, and t-shirts. You can transform any basic cheeky panties and bra to something cozy and flirty by layering your outfit with a cardigan or robe!

What To Wear: Glamorous Boudoir

Wearing something glamorous can truly elevate the experience. Whether it's a satin slip dress, full lingerie set with garter belt, stockings, and heels or something even more racy like a strappy bodysuit an outfit that makes you feel confident, strong, and sexy can go a long way. Opt for fabrics that flatter your figure and colors that complement your skin tone and overall vibe of your vision. Example given — for rich and moody think jeweled tones, for chic magazine style images try something black with gold, or rose gold details.

What To Wear: His Shirt / Themed Boudoir

Wearing something themed for your boudoir session can bring versatility and can be fun way to add more of your own personality to your boudoir photos. Don’t be afraid to incorporate light props (e.g. baseball caps, footballs, books, guitars, jersey), though its always a good idea to let the photographer know in advance if this is something that you’d like to do.

What To Wear: Bridal Boudoir

Bridal boudoir photos can be done in any boudoir outfit, but this is a special and intimate occasion so most woman will want to include something bridal in their boudoir photos. There are a few ways you can achieve this look just remember — This look can be elegant and sophisticated, or seductive and sensual. Its entirely up to you! The first and most common is to wear white, traditional bridal lingerie. Lace robes, silk gowns, anything sheer, even wearing nothing more than your engagement ring are all great choices, too! To elevate this look I recommend bringing in something sentimental, or something that will be a part of your wedding like your “something blue”, your engagement ring, your wedding shoes, veil etc. Another option is to introduce a sexy accessory like a wedding garter!

These boudoir outfit ideas are just a few of many to get you started! We never expect our clients to book their shoot with everything already figured out. As your boudoir photographer, I can work with you one on one during your consultation to help you figure out what to wear. Whether that’s needing help with ideas, knowing what to bring, not bring, or finding something that works best for your body type, you do not have to figure it out alone.

At the end of the day this is all about helping you look and feel your most confident. If that means going full glam, keeping it casual (or both) I want to encourage you to be yourself, wear what makes YOU feel beautiful, and have fun with it!

If you’ve already booked your Phoenix Boudoir Photography Session and are beginning to plan for your boudoir shoot you may be wondering how to prepare or what to bring with you on the day of your boudoir session. For our clients here at Bella Jade Boudoir we invite them to schedule a pre-shoot consultation with us to better understand just what to expect and get even more tailored guidance on how to get ready for their session with us.

Here are 5 quick tips we share with every boudoir client:

  1. Plan your outfits in advance including trying everything on well before the day of your shoot. If ordering lingerie items online, be sure to give yourself enough time for shipping, as well as possible exchanges/returns.

  2. Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure. Nails are one of the most overlooked details when it comes to having your photos taken. Since, this is boudoir getting a pedicure is even more noticeable especially if you do not plan on wearing heels in all of your photos. Not only will this freshen up your appearance but it’s a great way to unwind and relax any nerves you may have about doing a shoot like this.

  3. Be mindful of tan lines and clothing lines in your skin. We almost always recommend not getting a spray tan, however it does not hurt to ask if a spray tan is something that you are considering. In some situations having a professional spray tan can be beneficial. Wearing lose fitting clothing the morning of your shoot is ideal for avoiding lines in your skin from bra straps or other tight garments.

  4. Drink plenty of water and be sure to eat a light breakfast the morning of your session. Now is not the time to fast, start a new weigh loss diet etc. Drinking plenty of water will help reduce unwanted bloating while eating a light breakfast will give you the energy you’ll want during your shoot!

  5. Get out of your own head. If doing something like this is outside of your comfort zone getting nervous as you get closer to your shoot is not uncommon. Remind yourself why you are doing this then get out of your own head by giving yourself permission to show up all in and letting go of the idea that you need to look perfect or do it perfectly. Show up for yourself and just have fun with it!

What NOT to bring to your Scottsdale boudoir photo shoot:

An Overwhelming Amount of Jewelry

Jewelry is one of those statement pieces that can add an extra bit of va va voom to your photos. It looks good. It feels good. And its super tempting to want to bring it all! But, it actually best you leave the majority of your collection at home. Focus on one or two pieces that you love or that are sentimental to you and pair them with each outfit in advance. Your jewelry should be timeless, compliment your outfits, and fall nicely when laying down.

Distracting Props

If you want to personalize your session by bringing in a prop, GO FOR IT! We find props to be exciting, and for a lot of women bringing a prop can help pull you out of your shell and unleash the real you! Proceed with caution though. Some props can be cumbersome to work with and/or take away from the star of the show, which on this day is YOU.

For a list of props to avoid come back and check out our blog post Props | Love it or Leave it.

Your Make-up Bag

Mostly, because you wont need it. It’s understandable to bring your favorite lip or special foundation — Just know that our in house stylists have professional kits that can accommodate almost everything make up that is needed to get you ready for your boudoir shoot. This includes an array of false eyelashes and lip colors to choose from. Of course it is always best practice to let us know in advance of things like hypersensitive skin or allergies.

“It just doesn’t fit quite right” Outfits

Try everything on before you pack, and make sure that you give yourself enough time exchange your items as needed. If it just doesn’t fit quite right and you cant stop thinking about it … maybe its best to size up or down, or try something else entirely. Feeling a bit unsure about something because this is a little outside of your comfort zone is normal, but don’t push yourself so far that you cant get out of your head about it. A good outfit is made to fit you not the other way around. Outfits should hug your shape, fit well, enhance your beauty, and make you feel like a bad bitch.
