So, you did it! You’ve finally decided to do this crazy boudoir thing. Likely you’re sitting somewhere between nervous and excited — maybe you still have a few questions, but for the most part you can not wait to get in the studio, unleash your sexy, and step into your more confident self! Usually, the first question my boudoir clients ask when booking their Scottsdale boudoir shoot is “what should I wear".

There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to outfit options like —

body type, what you hope to highlight or de-emphasize, your personal style, what will look good on camera, what compliments your hair/eyes/skin tone, where the photoshoot is taking place (whether it be in our main studio or in The Grey Room), and what look and feel inspires you! It can seem overwhelming at first, but you’re in the right place because we specialize in boudoir photography, want you to feel great, and are here to help simplify things for you. We talk in detail on what to wear for your boudoir shoot during your pre-shoot styling & wardrobe consultation (included when you book a Bella Jade Boudoir session). And honestly, most women find planning their boudoir session to be fun, exciting, and liberating. It’s a chance to express yourself, play dress up as an adult ( which is better because you have much better taste now, I’m sure😊!) , and explore your more sensual side. What inspired you to pursue a Scottsdale boudoir photoshoot?

My first thought was for my husband's 50th birthday. I wanted to give him something he would never forget and something completely out of the usual. Honestly, the ad continued to pop up on my social media pages and each time I looked into it. Then, there was a massive discount and I figured, hey, why not?

Now was my time and this was the place for me.

I loved how welcoming and open the website and boudoir guide are. I really felt like I could be comfortable which is what you want when doing something out of your comfort zone.

Do you consider yourself a confident person or more of a work in progress? Did this boudoir experience change the way you see yourself?

My answer really depends on what I am doing and who I am with. I am shy when meeting new people, but open up quickly. This experience has helped me be more confident in my own skin and shown me that despite the "flaws" I look great.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

I was definitely nervous going into this and especially the day of.

I had strained my neck a couple of days prior to my shoot and was scared of how that might affect the end result because of the difficulty I had with some of the poses. I really wanted to make this amazing, so I pushed through with the help of Christina and some champagne :) The only thing I would change is the neck strain, otherwise, the rest of the experience was amazing.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

My favorite part of the experience probably has to be the reveal. Christina does such an amazing job and really makes this a special moment.

I also loved how the shoot itself flowed, it went from one thing to the next and truly felt like a whirlwind from beginning to end.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photo shoot?

Know your why.

Yes, many of us do this for our significant other, but have a reason to do this for you too. Many of us struggle with self-image, unfortunately, but this is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and prove to yourself you have a smoking hot body and improve the way you see yourself.

This experience has changed the way I see myself in so many ways. I fell in love with myself. I gave myself some grace.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

I started to second guess myself in the car. I had just gotten news about what was going on with my body and I was asking myself “What am I doing here, I’m a 52 year old woman, I just found out I am in full bloom in menopause, and I questioned what am I doing here?”

I got out of the car and thought, “I’m here, let’s just do this, I don’t have to share the photos if I don’t like them.”

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

Once I walked in and was greeted by Christina and Heidi, I just bursted out what I had just found out and experienced in the car. I started to tear up. They greeted me with open arms and said they were so excited that I showed up.

During the shoot we had a lot of laughs and for once during this building up to doing the shoot, I felt, this is where I am meant to be at this moment in my life.

I felt good about myself as they guided me through the experience.

The reveal is a whole other story. Haha

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photo shoot?

Just do it! You may consider, wonder, or question about it, but no matter what, jump all in and take it all in! It will be worth it, it will be just the beginning of you loving “yourself” more than you could ever imagine.

I've always been pretty confident, but after having 2 kids and seeing the signs of aging that the early 40s bring, I've started slowly being more body shy. This experience reminded me that I am more than just a 40 something year old mother. I am a woman, I am beautiful with all my flaws and I am going to hold my head up high and be proud of it all.

What inspired you to pursue a Scottsdale boudoir session?

I really wanted to capture this version of myself and celebrate all that is me.

Why did you choose Bella Jade Boudoir The Bella Jade Collection for your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

I chose Christina because of her vibe. I've seen her video clips on Facebook and Instagram and she seemed so positive and friendly, but sassy. That sassy side captured my attention and I knew there was no one better to go with.

Did you have any fears going into this? Were you able to overcome them?

My biggest fear was feeling uncomfortable and unliked. My experiences with women have always been pretty negative since my late teens and I've always felt like the black sheep in a room full of women. I was worried that I wouldn't connect with Christina, but oh man, she and Leah (the hair and make up artist) blew me away. I literally walked out of my photo shoot wishing they were both my friends in real life.

They both gave me something I haven't really experienced with women in the past. Instead of judgement, they gave me celebration.

I wouldn't change a thing.

What was your favorite part about your Scottsdale boudoir experience?

For me, the best part of the shoot was being celebrated! Second favorite part was getting the chance to be all dolled up and sexy. And the pictures that came as a result of that? Straight FIRE.

Do you have any advice for someone considering their own boudoir photo shoot?

Do it! With none or all of the flaws, do it! Whether you’re 20 or 50, do it. Capture this version of you and be proud of the body you have. Show the world what you are made of and let yourself feel like a queen.

What Not To Bring to Your Scottsdale Boudoir Photo Shoot | Best Boudoir Photographer near Phoenix, Arizona

Planning for your first boudoir photoshoot can be intimidating at first, especially when it comes to picking out outfits, accessories, props, and figuring out what to bring with you on the day of your shoot. We love being able to chat one on one with our boudoir clients before the day of their session and also share tons of tips and tricks in our private VIP group to help you prepare and feel more comfortable with doing a shoot like this with us.

We recommend that all of our boudoir clients pack for their big day no later than the night before. And to be honest, you really don’t need much more than handful of outfits, a pair of heels, and a few simple accessories. We talk a lot about this during your styling and wardrobe consultation so that you are not left scrambling the night before trying to guess what you should have packed.

While you may be wondering what you should bring in your boudoir bag, we also want you to consider what NOT to bring to your boudoir session.

What NOT to bring to your Scottsdale boudoir photo shoot:

An Overwhelming Amount of Jewelry

Jewelry is one of those statement pieces that can add an extra bit of va va voom to your photos. It looks good. It feels good. And its super tempting to want to bring it all! But, it actually best you leave the majority of your collection at home. Focus on one or two pieces that you love or that are sentimental to you and pair them with each outfit in advance. Your jewelry should be timeless, compliment your outfits, and fall nicely when laying down.

Distracting Props

If you want to personalize your session by bringing in a prop, GO FOR IT! We find props to be exciting, and for a lot of women bringing a prop can help pull you out of your shell and unleash the real you! Proceed with caution though. Some props can be cumbersome to work with and/or take away from the star of the show, which on this day is YOU.

Your Make-up Bag

Mostly, because you wont need it. It’s understandable to bring your favorite lip or special foundation — Just know that our in house stylists have professional kits that can accommodate almost everything make up that is needed to get you ready for your boudoir shoot. This includes an array of false eyelashes and lip colors to choose from. Of course it is always best practice to let us know in advance of things like hypersensitive skin or allergies.

“It just doesn’t fit quite right” Outfits

Try everything on before you pack, and make sure that you give yourself enough time exchange your items as needed. If it just doesn’t fit quite right and you cant stop thinking about it … maybe its best to size up or down, or try something else entirely. Feeling a bit unsure about something because this is a little outside of your comfort zone is normal, but don’t push yourself so far that you cant get out of your head about it. A good outfit is made to fit you not the other way around. Outfits should hug your shape, fit well, enhance your beauty, and make you feel like a bad bitch.

Miss N's Boudoir Photo Shoot in The New Grey Room! | Best Boudoir Photographer in Scottsdale, Phoenix AZ

All I can say is WOW! What a babe! This girls boudoir shoot in The ***new*** Grey Room was fire!

For a hot second she had me fooled. Going into it she was a little self conscious. She worried that she wouldn’t know how to pose and that she would look awkward in her boudoir photos. But as long as she trusted me, I wasn’t worried. She was going into this for all of the right reasons. She was ready in that its about time what are we waiting for kind of way. She needed this and I knew she was going to nail it!

What I didn’t know was that she was going to be tossing hair, laughing, and feeling herself before the warm up even barely started! And, I’ll take that kind of energy any day!

THAT-A-Girl!

For those of you reading this and wondering how the actual photo shoot works …

Miss N. says…

“I am my own worst critic and I wanted to do something to help me be more confident and I have never felt so confident like I did during my photo shoot.”

Toward the beginning of every session we like to do a warm up. Which is basically your boudoir photographer showing you a few tricks and coaching you through a series of tried and trusted poses. After 6+ years photographing women from all walks of life and different comfort levels, we know that keeping it simple in the beginning is this is the best way to get you started! And we tell you exactly what to do down to your finger tips. That’s right — you don’t have to know what you are doing. (you can exhale now… ). And here’s the thing … even if the first couple of photos are a total flop I don’t even care. I’m still not worried and you need not to either.

I realize — that even though this whole boudoir thing is not new to me, for most of our boudoir clients this is ALL new to you — every part of it

And if you’re feeling anything like Miss N was prior to booking her shoot and having a consultation with us, you are probably stepping way out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. So its OK to be nervous. We get it!

The warm up gives you a chance to get more comfortable being in front of the camera, taking direction, and finding your own flow! Again, we don’t expect you to come in having it all figured out in less than 60 seconds. Eventually the nerves will fade out and you’ll find your own rhythm. You’d be surprised how quickly you can get passed thinking about flaws and fears when you are having fun!

For Miss N it went a little like this: It was like I blinked, looked down at my camera, then BAM there was this super confident, playful, feeling some type of way Bombshell in front of me barely even through the warm up!

We LOVE that! Permission to brag to all of your friends how bad af you are!

I came into the new year wanting to love myself more and I needed a confidence boost and I thought what better way than a boudoir shoot! I needed to step out of my comfort zone and this definitely did that for me.

To be completely honest? I was thinking about doing a boudoir shoot and Bam! There you were popping up on Instagram!

Work in progress for sure! I am my own worst critic and I wanted to do something to help me be more confident and I have never felt so confident like I did during my photo shoot.

I am normally a very awkward person so I was worried that would come out in my pictures and it definitely did not. I was amazed at how well Christina captured my natural sexiness and how natural I looked in my photos.

Miss D, like many women we get the honor of photographing at our Scottsdale boudoir studio had wanted to do a shoot like this for a long time! For her, doing a boudoir photo shoot was something she needed to do for herself. And, even though she was a bit nervous to book the shoot at first — it was something on her bucket list and she was determined to accept the challenge.

Miss D. came in for her very first boudoir shoot at our Scottsdale boudoir studio barely nervous at all! Believe it or not, at the time she had two 18 month old twins, hustling multiple businesses, was getting married, and planning a move all at the same time! So, I am so glad to see that she was able to carve out some time JUST for herself to enjoy the a day of self care and to celebrate all of her milestones.

When planning her boudoir outfits she knew that she wanted to do something that would leave her feeling sexy and glamourous with lingerie and a classy garter belt (hold the stockings — wait until you see these photos!)

After having her pre photoshoot consultation and seeing ideas on our Instagram she felt inspired and decided it would also be fun to explore her more playful side by bringing in a baseball jersey to wear as well. This is what’s great about this process! Because, seriously they turned out to be some of the sexiest boudoir photos!

And, though Miss D. did not have as many reservations as most do going into their very first boudoir session, she wants other women to know regardless just do it and don’t over think it!

I really think that is good advice. Not just for deciding to book a Scottsdale boudoir photo shoot for yourself but also during planning! Be open minded, keep it simple, and don’t overthink it. The sexiest photos sometimes don’t require a ton of outfit planning at all. Plain and simple - you gotta learn to trust me! If I ask you to do something that you’re like… where is she going with this? There is a reason for my madness, I promise! Like I mentioned above, I know how to photograph you. Girl, you think I’m going to just let you not look hot as hell while posing?! I want you to LOVE your end photos, so I am going to go above and beyond to ensure that you look and feel amazing. Again, I have curves for days so I really can understand what you want and the poses that are going to make your body look fire.

Respect Your Curves

If there was one thing I could tell my mid to plus size ladies out there it would be,

“Stop hiding your smokin’ curvy body!”

Seriously! You owe it to your curves to honor them and show them off. The thing is, your curves aren’t going to disappear the day of your shoot so what’s the point in hiding them? Pick out outfits that accentuate your body rather than hide it. BTW, baggy clothes can end up making you look bigger in photos!

Teddies and Bodysuits. It’s a Yes From Me!

If there is one type of lingerie that will flatter your figure while making you feel comfortable, it is one-pieces like teddies and bodysuits. Invest in some high-quality onesies that hug your body and really give you that pop to your curves while smoothing out your midsection. Because let’s face it, it’s a pain point for a lot of women! So if its concealed you will feel so much better about it.

High-Waisted Panties and Stockings Are Your New Friend.

Again, who doesn’t love it when their muffin top is smoothed out and out of sight? Thanks to high-waisted panties, you can experience it for yourself and see that these bad boys will hug your body in alllll the right places. And please don’t forget the stockings! For us women, cellulite is the bane of our existence. But let’s not worry about something so silly during our fun and amazing shoot. Opt for some good stockings that make your legs look longer and you feel comfortable in, as well. It’s all about comfort, lady!!

Busty Babe = Full Coverage Bra

Full coverage for a boudoir shoot? That seems like two opposite ideas, right? Nope! If you are a fellow busty queen then you will absolutely want to go for some full coverage bras because they really do help add support to keep them in the right place for any pose you’re in.

Listen, as a gifted chested woman myself, you are really going to thank me for telling you to grab some sexy full coverage bras so that you won’t have to adjust the girls every couple of minutes.

And there you have it! My boudoir tips for mid to plus sized women are here for you to use in your next shoot so that you feel comfortable and look your sexiest. As women, we’re prone to think because we have thick thighs or wide hips (whatever it is you’re all tied up about) that we can’t be sexy or that we shouldn’t do things like boudoir shoots. Naaah.

What If I See My Boudoir Photos and Don’t Love Them? | 5 Things You Can Do to Get Out of Your Own Head

One of the most rewarding things about being a boudoir photographer is the opportunity to make a positive impact on how women see themselves. I get to encourage women to feel more comfortable in their own skin, celebrate their bodies, and learn to love themselves unconditionally.

You don’t have to embrace every single flaw…

in order to love yourself more.

Whether these women come into their boudoir photo shoot a little nervous and unsure, or they walk right in feeling confident, ready to stand fully in their body and unleash their sexy — I am honored to be a part of their experience and create something beautiful together.

Not surprisingly though, there is a less spoken part of boudoir and its one that might make boudoir photographers a little bit uncomfortable themselves. But for me, I think it has a place here to be addressed. In fact, you might be asking it for yourself …

What if I see my boudoir photos and don’t love them?

Since so many women have struggled with body image or self worth at some point in their lives I NEVER want to dismiss this question. If you are someone that is currently dealing with negative body image or discouraging thoughts about how you look or might look in your photos, this question is valid.

Not every experience is going to be the same.

Why? Because self love is a journey not a destination and we’re all moving through it at a different pace.

Do I think you are going to come in and hate your boudoir photos? Well, no of course not.

I stand confidently behind my work, our studios approach to boudoir photography, and the belief that boudoir can be truly empowering. I MEAN THAT and want you to know that you are in good hands here at Bella Jade Boudoir.

But I also believe …

that it is equally as important to acknowledge — boudoir is not a one size fits all “happy pill” that is going to instantly undo years of internalized thoughts, or erase every bad thing that you’ve ever said or thought about your body.

What it CAN do is ease the pressure to be perfect before you can be present.

It can give you room to show up, be yourself, and figure out how to feel ok about your body regardless of any insecurities, imperfections, or limiting beliefs.

It creates a safe space for you to express yourself, and furthermore explore the relationship you have with body.

A space that is cared for by other women who want nothing more than to see you recognize your beauty and feel more confident in your own skin!

If there is anything that I want you to take away from this its that …

You don’t have to embrace every single flaw in order to love yourself more.

Accept that they are there,

and realize that you are incredibly powerful, beautiful,

& equally deserving of self love with or without them.

here are Here are 5 things you can do (leading up to your shoot/Viewing) to help Get Out of Your Own Head:

1. Challenge yourself to focus on the GOOD.

   Like, your courage to try something new. Your ability to stand fully in your truth despite your fears. (example given — the mere fact that you care enough about yourself to have clicked on this blog, booked the shoot, hired the therapist, wrote the journal, picked up the book, whatever it is etc.)

2. Recognize that you are human.

   
   You will never be completely void of your inner critic. Hear her, but don’t let her paralyze you. your value is not determined by your weakest thought.

3. Be mindful of how you internalize what other people think/say of you.

   When you receive criticism from others, take the time to evaluate whether it is constructive or destructive and file it accordingly! Hold space only for things that fuel you, help you grow, and serve you and others in positive ways.

4. Release yourself from unrealistic expectations.

   Whether it be your weight, your confidence level before or after your shoot, the way you fit or don’t fit into the latest beauty trends/ideals … Remember, These things are constantly evolving and so are you! Set realistic goals, and be flexible in your approach. Again, we are all different and interpret or experience things in different ways.

5. Be gentle with yourself and cultivate kindness.

   Reclaim your power by giving yourself permission to fail, treating yourself with compassion, trusting the process, and speaking to yourself in ways that motivate and inspire rather than shame and diminish.

Remember sweaters can get a bit toasty — a light and soft material is ideal. NO WOOL. You can thank me later ;)

Business in the front party in the back sweaters are the BEST for your fall boudoir wardrobe. (think — plunging backs, V backs, or backs that are twisted/knotted)

V neck sweaters are great if you’d like a little cleavage, want to show off your collar bones or have a chest tattoo!

Do I have to have my boudoir photos shared online?

At The Bella Jade Collection we specialize in boudoir and have photographed hundreds of women with all sorts of different backgrounds. From married women, single women, women in there 20’s, women in their 50’s, physicians, teachers, store clerks, stay at home moms, police wives, and more. These are just a few examples and everyone’s story is different.

Some would want nothing less than for us to share their images to inspire more women to do a shoot like this, some would rather leave this in their private life or for his eyes only. Both are entirely respectable options — and we support both decisions and anything in between.

In short, we give our clients the option to have their very own boudoir photos remain private, because it just feels right.

These are photos we are taking, it’s our studios artistic vision, time, and copyright but ultimately this is your body, and we entirely understand if doing a boudoir session in privacy and confidence is important to you.

As soon as you book a shoot with us you are sent a boudoir photography agreement which includes more information on how we use your photos as well as the option to select which level of privacy is right for you.

Some women choose to allow us to use all of their images at our discretion,
some choose to allow only images that don’t show your face,
or even opt to select which images specifically are ok for use.

And while we’d love to use them all — we have plenty of women who ask that we do not share any of their image at all. Thats totally ok, too.

The choice is yours and Bella Jade Boudoir will always respect your right to privacy.

When it comes to having self confidence, you are equally as capable as the woman standing next to you.

Can I look that confident in my own boudoir photos? Is my body good enough to be photographed like that? Will people think I’ll look silly? These pictures all look so beautiful, but if I do this and see my own photos will I hate them?

You are not the first person to ask these questions. We are human and you are getting ready to do something that is probably not within your normal comfort one. But I want to caution you from being consumed by them.

If the ultimate goal is to learn to love yourself more and feel empowered to be more comfortable in your own skin - comparing yourself to others is a slippery slope.

When it comes to having self confidence, you are equally as capable as the woman standing next to you.

But I realize its not that simple.

Comparing is a common habit and while their are SOME positive things that can come from comparison, there is often more to lose than to gain from doing so. Why? You will never get anywhere by comparing your biggest insecurities to someone else’s greatest successes. And — there is never going to come a time where there isn’t at least someone doing “it” better than you. Above all- you are entirely too unique to ever be compared fairly.

If nothing else, comparing yourself to others will only deprive you of your own self love and deprive you of experiencing your own joy when you DO succeed.

This is YOUR boudoir shoot and no one is going to do it like you do! And while most of us have similar insecurities we all overcome them in our own way on our own time-line.

If you are having these questions as you are deciding whether or not to do a shoot and find yourself consumed by comparisons here is what you can do instead:

1. Set your intention.
   Why do you want to do a shoot like this? Remind yourself that becoming more comfortable in your own skin doesn’t mean you have to change it to be more like someone else. Figure out who YOU are, what makes YOU feel good and do more of that.

1. If you do look towards examples for inspiration…
   choose images of women who have a similar body type to yours. This will reduce distractions that trigger negative thoughts. Things like “That would never work for me because my boobs aren’t that big, or my waist isn’t that tiny” can limit your ability to see yourself experiencing the same joy. Seeing someone who has a similar body type to you can give you more realistic expectations and show you the beauty that is uniquely possible for you.

2. If you see someone or something that you admire don’t assume she has it better just because she IS better.

   We are all the same kind of different and there is no magic button for anyone. Shift your focus onto what they did to get where they are and introduce some of those concepts into your own self love journey. What I mean by that is, you can pull inspiration from others without overanalyzing whether or not you measure up to them. Instead of saying “That girl looks incredible - I could never look that good” recognize that she didn’t become that confident overnight. Chances are she too took active steps to get there. Let her success drive you but don’t let your like-ness or differences it be a qualifier of whether or not you get to have this too.
